Enkelte kunder foretrækker at tobakshullet ikke farves sort, men i stedet poleres op lige som pibens udvendige side eller efterlades ubehandlet. Det er ofte pibesamlere, som kun bruger piberne til udstilling.
Som sagt er det nu forbudt at røre ved piben for andre end pibemageren selv, men er han meget forelsket kan man som kæreste opleve at få lov til at fore tobakshullet, og det er en meget stor ære. Det er nemlig meget vigtigt, at der ikke kommer kønrøg ud over kanten for så skal man igang igen med at slibe og polere.

As I told you before, it is no longer allowed for anyone but the pipemaker to touch the pipe at this point. BUT! If the pipemaker is in love and you are the one, you might be allowed to do the coating with lampblack. I tried that once in my life! That was the greatest honour I have ever acchieved. This is not an easy job, because it is very important that the lampblack is not going anywhere but INSIDE the pipebowl. I did it and I was good at it!
