When you dig up the burl, you start by cutting off the branches and the trunk with a machete!
There may be more than one trunk on the Erica. The more trunks the less chances that there will be a good plateaublock in the burl. That why a good Briardigger chooses an Erica with only one trunk whenever possible.
After this first step you clean the earth and small stones surrounding the burl, until you can see the burl ending, and the roots starting. For this job, you use a combination of an axe and a pickaxe. Finally you cut off the roots, and leave them in the ground. Now the burl is free.
Finally you clean the burl for soil and stones with a smaller axe. You don´t want stones to get in the way when you cut the burl on the big saw. First of all you`ll ruin your sawblade and also keep in mind, that it can be quite dangerous for the cutter if small stonepieces hit his face when cutting.
